Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj is a distinguished former Indian diplomat with nearly four decades of experience across bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, global strategy and negotiation. Her career has spanned key assignments at the United Nations as well as in Africa, Europe, and the Indian Ocean region, combining regional expertise with a global outlook.
Most recently, she served as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 2022 to 2024, where she led India’s engagement during its Security Council term and presided over the Council in December 2022. Prior to this, she was Ambassador of India to Bhutan from 2019 to 2022, where she played a vital role in strengthening a close and time-tested partnership through enhanced cooperation in hydropower, digital connectivity, and education.
From 2017 to 2019, she served as High Commissioner of India to South Africa and Lesotho, advancing India’s political and economic relations in the African continent. Between 2014 and 2017, she represented India at UNESCO in Paris, promoting India’s interests in education, culture, and science. Earlier, as Chief of Protocol to the Government of India from 2011-2014, she led the planning and conduct of several high-level state visits and international summits, ably projecting India’s rising global profile.
Her diplomatic journey has included assignments in New York, Paris, London, Cape Town, and Port Louis, as well as a tenure at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London as Staff Officer to the Secretary-General. This has enabled her to develop leadership and negotiation skills, and the ability to navigate complex geopolitical environments.
As a public speaker and thought leader, she has addressed prestigious forums, including Harvard and Columbia Universities, and has contributed commentaries on global diplomacy, multilateralism, and India's foreign policy.
She holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Delhi and a Bachelor’s degree from Isabella Thoburn College, Lucknow. She is fluent in Hindi, English, and French. She is married and has one daughter.
