Global Horizons
In this issue, the author focuses on the status of wars in West Asia and Ukraine, the G7 Summit, and significant developments in India’s proactive diplomacy.
The US continued to keep the world wrapped in uncertainty, from its approach to ongoing conflicts to its relationships with partners. With the signing of a 14 point MOU with Iran, key issues were kicked down the road. A two-month ceasefire under the MOU appeared fragile, while Iran remained unbowed and defiant, showcasing its national spirit with a delayed funeral of the late Supreme Leader killed in US-Israeli strikes, which drew mass public attendance. Iran kept up its pressure to control Hormuz, and Israel persisted with operations in Lebanon.
France successfully hosted the G7 Summit, where a somewhat subdued Trump allowed consensus to emerge around key geopolitical issues and a compact for beneficial economic partnerships.
PM Modi attended the G7 Summit, highlighting the critical importance of building trust and the expectations of the Global South from the international community.
India’s summit level engagements during the month included a key Modi-Trump meeting on the sidelines of the G7, and PM’s visits to France, Slovakia and the Seychelles. The Modi-Macron summit confirmed the special position of France as a key interlocutor for India in Europe.
India hosted the newly elected President of Myanmar for an extended visit, underlining the importance of trade, economic, defence and security ties with this close neighbour.
